In the Shadows of Utopia: The Khmer Rouge and the Cambodian Nightmare

Amazing show, feels like I’ve been listening for twenty years haha. Hopefully my grandchildren will see the end of the story

Amazing research

Protect Lachlan at all costs - the man is a multinational treasure! It's not so much as a podcast as it is a fascinating graduate degree in Cambodian history. Did I care about Cambodian history before this podcast? Nope - I came here for some salacious stories about Pol Pot. Instead, I encountered Lachlan's earnest passion for Cambodia, its people, and its history, and it has been wonderful to witness and learn from. A billion stars for Lachlan and his research and his ability to contextualize what is really just a blip in the amazing history of Cambodia. I was lucky enough to find this podcast in 2025 so I could binge all of seasons 1 & 2. Now I'm all caught up and need more! Can't wait! 😊

This podcast is amazing in it’s depth and thoughtfulness as it describes the entire history of Cambodia to better understand and explained the horrific rain of the Khmer Rouge. Superb and worth listening to every episode.

Outstanding podcast by a clearly dedicated professional historian.
