Good enough history, unlistenable story
Fin clearly knows the history well enough, and frankly if there were a different narrator of it, this would absolutely be 5 stars. My issue is with Fin’s style, especially in the beginning. I’m trying to listen to the story chronologically and I’ve given up. Every other sentence is “he must have” and then some speculation on a historical figures feelings. If you’re relaying something that was written, then just state it as fact. But if you’re not, don’t add color to the situation when unnecessary. He can’t provide the history without over-dramatization. He once said a king was annihilated multiple times. That word is not something that can happen to a man in succession. This overacting is what kills it for me, and it makes it hard to actually understand what were important points in history when every minor skirmish between neighboring kingdoms “must have felt like the end was coming”.
Three Days in July
Spectacular, informative, beautifully paced, professional. This 3 episode series is one of the very best I have heard.
Brigid
Brigid *was* a Neolithic goddess in Europe, including the British Isles in ancient times. Her name, Brid or Bride as the Scots call her, is found in countless place names, even possibly including “Britain.” The Briganti for one was a goddess-worshipping tribe in Switzerland, where her name lives on well beyond Ireland. Odd of you, an Irish historian, to disavow this amazing if mysterious heritage.
Second to None
Fin is a true historian and storyteller. As a 57 year old son of Irish immigrants, I am disappointed that I knew so little about the history of my homeland and family. I think it is not uncommon to not talk about the past, particularly when it was a tough one. Fin is helping me make up for lost time.
One of the best podcasts I’ve ever listened to
This podcast is phenomenally well researched. I love all the firsthand accounts throughout. Keep up the great work!
