Let's Talk About Myths, Baby! | Greek Mythology & the Ancient Mediterranean

So excited to find a podcast about Greek mythology hosted by someone who is passionate about the topic. A great blend of information and commentary. Also, having a feminine voice presenting the masculine dominated genre is refreshing.

Yup. Men have a very long track record of treating women poorly, and we continue to do so. You’re 100% on the nose with that. But you make sweeping assumptions on how you assume we think. That’s sexist plain and simple. I didn’t find Nolan’s interpretation of Circe repulsive at all. I found it vindicating. If you’re a pig you’d consider her ugly, sure. But I found her home and her and her appearance and her actions beautifully portrayed. Odysseus’s men are not the good guys. That was literally the entire point of Nolan’s translations.

I have listened to every episode of this podcast from beginning to end (latest episode as I’m writing this dated 06/30/26). I genuinely enjoyed the unique, feminist perspective Liv presented on myths and plays, and I especially appreciated her takes on the Spartan mirage, Atlantis, and stuffy old white men who ignored or did their best to destroy women’s impacts on all things Ancient Greek. However, I’ve grown increasingly frustrated by her harping on Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Odyssey movie (we get it, Matt Damon’s a poor choice; yes Liv, we agree this movie presents another white-washed Western take on the ancient Mediterranean, etc.) But with today’s episode, she abruptly made an about-face and started gushing over a special contest/sweepstakes event where she teamed up with a marketing firm to promote tickets for a pre-screening of The Odyssey in Toronto. And she will also be attending this pre-screening. That is correct—the woman who spent well over a year denouncing this movie and reading it to filth and beyond is going to actually see it, and she’s happy (?) to do so. Honestly, given Liv’s penchant for sarcasm, I’m not sure if she’s trolling her listeners, planning on giving The Odyssey the MST3K treatment, or something else entirely. Maybe she suffered a traumatic brain injury. Maybe she got strong-armed into signing a contract so she can earn the money she desperately needs to continue this podcast. Whatever the case, I find it insulting that someone who claims to be feminist and against Western patriarchy/colonial ideals is suddenly quite willing to see a movie she’s been hating on just to earn some coin. Sorry Liv, you lost me and my subscription. I hope the snacks at intermission are worth it.
