Mark Steel's in Town

I’m from The USA and have been enjoying Mark Steel’s in town for years. In the UK, I’ve not yet been outside of London and eighty percent of the places Mark visits I’d not heard of before. I follow along with a map and photo searches while laughing and learning about each new, remarkable, yet relatable place. I love the way Mark sends-up everything while humanizing everyone. What an important service Mark provides highlighting real places, real communities, and real and diverse people. I wish Mark, or someone, would do the same for America. Or, are American “communities” too divided, too sensitive, too lacking in introspection for his kind of humanizing humor. If anyone could find the humanity of a place, any place, even an American place, it’s Mark Steel! Thank you Mark and glad you are back!

We listened to many In Towns back to back while traveling to and from the hospital for my wife’s radiation treatment. Every day for 6 weeks during summer 2023. It strikes just the right balance of warmth and humour, perfect for a cancer patient and their chauffeur spouse. A slightly odd review, possibly, but in light of Mark’s recent cancer diagnosis, it seemed apt. Thanks for supporting us through difficult times!

I adore how Mark so kindly and lovingly skewers all these towns. I would listen to him read out the dictionary. I bet it would be hilarious!
