Everybody remembers the morning of September 11, 2001, when two passenger jets flew into the World Trade Center in downtown Manhattan. But the idea of toppling the towers was not new. Thirty years ago, a group of men set off a bomb in the garage beneath the North Tower, hoping it would tumble into the South Tower. At the time, this was the largest improvised explosive device ever ignited on American soil. It killed six people and injured thousands, leaving behind a 100-foot crater five stories d...

You almost got it right

I want to thank you for the time, care, and research you clearly put into this podcast. The depth of information and the respect shown to such a complex and painful subject truly matter. For many of us in the 9/11 community, this is not history, it is ongoing. We are still fighting for justice, and responsible storytelling like this plays an important role in keeping the truth visible. You got so much right, which is why it is important to correct where the narrative drifted at the very end. I have been traveling to Guantánamo Bay for the pretrial proceedings, and the reality of how KSM and the other four detainees are living is something the public does not fully understand. They are not in harsh, isolated conditions. They live in a communal environment. They have access to video calls with their families. Their legal teams cook them halal meals. They have exercise equipment, including ellipticals. KSM has even gone so far as to convert his own lawyer. This is precisely why they have no incentive to leave. As long as they remain classified as detainees and are not convicted, they are protected under the Geneva Conventions and are afforded a level of treatment that many would find deeply troubling given the scale of their crimes. It is also critical to remember exactly who we are talking about. KSM was responsible for the planning of 9/11, the murder of Daniel Pearl, and the attempted shoe bombing by Richard Reid. These are not abstract figures. These are men who carried out and orchestrated acts of unimaginable violence. That is why accuracy at every stage of the conversation matters. The stakes are too high, and the truth is too important. Thank you again for bringing attention to this. I just ask that the full reality, especially the part most people never see, continues to be told with the same rigor and honesty.

This is what most people have envisioned podcast would be like. Quality, straight to the point. The story is one that’s rarely told. But the authors described the story from all angles. Well done!
