The move away from Phonics did not start where this Podcast’s coverage of America’s literacy crisis starts—it goes back decades earlier. But this show covered enough of what was happening at that time to make clear what a mess Reading education was in at the time. Much has improved since the release of this pod, but much of that change was because of this podcast.

For every parent, teacher, and person learning to read, this well-researched and -reported podcast is a must. Who wants to discover that their Driver’s Ed teacher omitted the importance of visual cues when you’re behind the wheel, or that your cooking teacher never showed you how to get your fingers out of the way of the knife. The way we learn to read—and to love reading (or not)—can have lifelong consequences. I can’t wait to hear what this team does next. Conquer math?

Every child, even children who are not struggling with reading will benefit from their parents listening to this show. I wish education didn’t become politicized and instead we only looked at what is best for our children and therefore our country.

I was blown away by this story. My child has been struggling to read since Kindergarten. He is in 5th grade now and is 2.5 years behind his peers in reading. When I listened to this podcast, I felt the gamut of emotions. I felt sadness, anger, and validation. I didn’t know that my child’s school was using these reading strategies and curriculum until I recognized the language from the podcast from my youngest son’s kindergarten class. “Does it make sense?” “Look at the picture” “does it make sense” I must have heard my son’s teacher use these phrases countless times when she updates us on their weekly reading instruction. Thank you so much for bringing this story to light. It’s honestly painful to hear and I feel that I failed my child in not recognizing this sooner. I feel empowered now to be able to share this story and recognize that this is happening in my community and have the tools and knowledge to change the tides.
